| About the Copley-Willoughby Classificatory (CWC) Scheme
The Copley-Willoughby scheme is a deductive system representing 45 pairs of shoes. The predominant feature of this scheme is literary warrant, therefore other shoes aren't represented in this effort. Our combined effort retains many of the features of Copley scheme, namely four main classes and heavy reliance on mnemonics. This scheme also gives a better representation of womens' footware, rather than tacking on a separate class as an afterthought, as does the Copley scheme. We took three categories of shoes from Zappo's website - - athletic, casual, and dress shoes are represented in the scheme. The "A", "C", and "D" classes seemed to be a fair representation of our combined shoe collection. In addition, we added a "B" class for those items that didn't seem to fit any of the extant three classes. The result of our efforts is a scheme that makes use of hospitality by readily using subclasses when they are necessary. In all, there are 15 subclasses, and two sub subclasses in the outline. This high level of specificity allows for quick retrieval of the shoe within the scheme, as well as for keeping the notation relatively short. The notation is largely mnemonic, with second and even third capital letters used to represent subclasses in the scheme. The numbering system uses the expressive feature of grouping colors of shoes together and allowing for room between groups of colors as the collection grows. The four classes are subdivided by function, then divided further by color. In those subcategories where there are more than two pairs of shoes, another characteristic has been used for greater specificity. Choose the schedule to see all of the characteristics that are used in the scheme. Lastly, a "Cutter number" is assigned to each pair of shoes. The authors have used the same Cutter table that is used to catalog monographic materials with some minor changes. The number is derived by using the name of the manufacturer. All of the classes attempt to follow a general to specific pattern wherever possible, at least in regards to the numbering of items. How to read the CWC Outline The four main classes are indicated by the broad class letter on the left. The hierarchical notation is expressed by the tabular placement of text on the page. Images used in the table are representative of those items in the given class, while individual images are available on the far right. Number assignments are provided for each pair of shoes.
