Jacob Copley Ph.D. Candidate, Information Science School of Library and Information Science Indiana University Bloomington, IN |
My name is Jacob and I grew up in downtown Boston. I have been interested in the distribution of information since my first encounter with the Internet at Harvard University. In my senior year there I took a semester of study at Oxford. One of the things I discovered in my research was how inadequate the Library of Congress Classification system is in classifying books anywhere, not to mention books in Europe. Once I reached Indiana University Bloomington where I received my Masters of Library Science and am continuing my course work for a PhD, I immersed myself in the studies of LCC. I have looked it over from many angles trying to find ways to fix its flaws, allowing the positive aspects to shine through. In my efforts to create better schemes I try to use many mediums, mostly those of familiarity to me, requiring less additional research and allowing me to focus totally on the scheme itself. Obviously, due to the use of shoes in the scheme featured below, I am running out of ideas. Look for future websites featuring the 18 other LCC modified schemes I have pondered linked here. |
| About the Copley Classificatory (CC) Scheme
My goal was to create a scheme that took advantage of the infinite hospitality of LCC, while augmenting the use of mnemonics. Originally, I decided to create a scheme of three main classes that reflect my own shoe collection. I settled on athletic, casual, and dress as three top-level classes. These classes are expressed with mnemonic notation by "A", "C", and "D" classes. Later discussions with my wife led to me to understand the inherent sex bias in my scheme. After one impassioned speech by my spouse, which was reminiscent of Abigail Adams "Remember the Ladies" letter to her husband, I realized that her shoes could easily be accommodated by adding the "W" class. This addition also kept my original goal of employing mnemonics in the notation. The CC scheme now reflects the entire collection of shoes in the Copley household - - the notion of "literary warrant" - - with a logical order for all of the shoes expressed in the four main classes. The original three classes are subdivided by function, then listed alphabetically by brand name. Due to the use of mnemonics, third letters were used for some subclasses. The "W" class was developed later and independent of the first three, with very broad categories for shoes. It was deemed unnecessary to include the manufacturer of womens' shoes, as this led to over classification. The "W" class first divides by indoor or outdoor use, then by type of shoe (e.g. heel or flat.) All of the classes attempt to follow a general to specific pattern wherever possible. How to read the CC Outline The four main classes are indicated by the broad class letter on the left. The hierarchical notation is expressed by the tabular placement of text on the page. At present, number assignments seem less important given the present size of the collection, although broad number ranges are provided. You may also choose the entire CC Schedule. |
